Wanna know your neighbors salary & net worth?

That's exactly what you can do online in Norway. Go online and search your neighbors name & bingo, what shows up on the screen is their 2008 tax filings! YES, their tax filings!!!

Norway believes in transparency, but publishing all of their citizens salaries is in my opinion going wayyyyy to far! Criminals are probably having a field day, co-worker boxing matches are probably inevitable & kids that love to show off probably can't wait to go to school & brag about how rich their parents are compared to others!

What are your thoughts?

Going to be interesting To stay tuned to news out of Norway to see how this impacts their culture.

This is only 'shocking' to people who don't understand Norge culture. For several years I was running a Norway-based company that was repositioning itself as a US startup. As everyone knows, salary ladders there are strict, tied closely to educational level and degree. There are no lurid exceptions to be found online. They also keep a keen eye on the 'distance' between the CEO salary and the lowest employee -- and it's orders of magnitude less than in the US.

Ray, great insight! Thanks for sharing your personal perspective it really helps to bring more understanding to this issue. I've also learned it's one of the happiest places to live! I'm trying to find the source of that survey but that's what ive recently heard & it makes sense.

Thank you Ray for understanding that the American culture and attitude does not apply to the rest of the world. I was born and grew up in Norway but have spent the last 20 years here in the US of A. This 'open" salary" information has been in effect for many many years and is noting new. And guess what, there has been no violent outbreaks, earthquakes, or any other natural disasters there because of it.

The great things in Norway is that most people are not in a salary or one-up competition with each other. Family life and quality of life is more important than impressing the Joneses. They only buy what they can afford. People don't have to work themselves to death to pay off their credit cards or other luxury debts. When weekends arrive most people head out of town with their families and enjoy quality time together without worries of what bills are waiting for them at home.

What is even more "shocking" is that my Norwegian equivalent of 1040 arrives every year already filled out by the Norwegian government, including all my debts and assets in my bank accounts. All I have to do is check it for errors and confirm online or mail it back signed. Time spent for last year taxes = 10 minutes. And no, "big brother" has not caused a disintegration of the constitution or taken control of my destiny or caused any other bodily harm.

So Mario, please take some time next year and go travel to other countries and try to get a real perspective of other cultures instead of believing all you hear on CNN or other news channels. Then next time you bump into some "shocking" facts about other nations you will understand it better.
